How does the Vecton UV unit work?

The UV lamp inside our Vecton unit produces UV irradiation at a wavelength of 254nm making the units extremely effective in controlling bacteria, yeast, moulds and other pathogens.

The internal void space between the UV lamp and quartz sleeve (through which water is passed) determines its effectiveness, as UVC light will only penetrate through a limited depth of water. The void space in the Vecton unit is deliberately designed to be narrow (approx. 6mm) which means that pathogens passing through the unit cannot escape exposure to the UVC light.

Range of units available

There are three units in the Vecton range, and the size of aquarium and flow rate of water through the units (which should be 2-4 times the aquarium volume per hour) determines which size of unit is required:-

Vecton UV8 - 8 watt UV suitable for tanks of up to 50 UK/60 US gallons (230 litres) with a maximum flow rate of 150 UK/180 US gallons/680 litres per hour.

Vecton UV15 - 15 watt UV suitable for tanks of up to 95 UK/115 US gallons (430 litres) with a maximum flow rate of 285 UK/340 US gallons/1300 litres per hour.

Vecton UV25 - 25 watt UV suitable for tanks of up to 125 UK/150 US gallons (570 litres) with a maximum flow rate of 375 UK/445 US gallons/1700 litres per hour.

The units are designed for reliability and long life, are easy to install and require minimal maintenance.

Routine maintenance required

The unit should be inspected regularly. The UV lamp inside the Vecton unit has a life of approximately 6 months continuous use. After this period the UVC output from the lamp is no longer sufficient to give effective bacterial control. Use the date indicator on the top of the unit to point to the month when first installed, and the lower arrow will point to the month when the next lamp change is due.

If you change the lamp at the correct intervals, you will not need to move the date dial after the initial setting. However, if you replace the lamp out of sequence please ensure you reset the dial. Make sure you change the "O" rings each time you replace the lamp. The quartz sleeve which protects the lamp from the water will need cleaning when you replace the lamp. Please note that the main body will need to be replaced after five years' continuous use.

Where should a Vecton UV Steriliser be used?

The Vecton is effective in tropical freshwater, cold water and tropical marine aquariums so any aquarist who wants to improve the water quality and conditions for his aquarium inhabitants should use one. Their use is particularly desirable for aquariums that have a high biological load such as marine fish, cold water fish and Cichlid community aquariums, but also other aquariums with sensitive inhabitants such as invertebrates and Discus fish.
